Press statement:

Today, the Federal Ministry of Economics published its white paper entitled "An electricity market for the Energiewende". Hildegard Müller, President of the General Executive Management Board of the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) stated in an initial position statement:

"The long awaited white paper can now be used as the basis for a more detailed discussion. From our point of view, the fundamental political decision made regarding the further development of an Energy Only Market 2.0 does not resolve the essential problems of the energy industry. Our companies urgently need an economic perspective on modern, efficient gas-fired power stations, for example. We continue to see the exclusive further development of the electricity market 2.0 as insufficient for guaranteeing a secure energy supply at all times in the medium term.

Despite our expressed concerns, we are looking forwards, since what we need now is a viable implementation of this fundamental political decision for all parties concerned. We will continue to introduce our industry proposals in a constructive manner, such as for strengthening the Energy Only Market. Furthermore, we must also discuss the period following 2020 as quickly as possible. Federal Minister of Economics, Sigmar Gabriel, has taken up our call for a dialogue at the BDEW Congress. Our offer to have a constructive and structured discussion about the contribution of the power station sector to the climate targets stands. This dialogue should get under way as quickly as possible."
